Exploring Chinese folk religion: Popularity, diffuseness, and diversities

Folk religion, as the basis of religious landscape in traditional China, is a highly syncretic system which includes elements from Buddhism, Daoism, and other beliefs. Due to shortcomings denomination-based measurement, most previous social surveys have documented very low percentage folk religion adherents found almost no overlapping among This study offers quantitative portrait popularity, diffuseness, diversity Chinese religion. With improved instruments 2018 China Family Panel Studies, we first observe that nearly 50% respondents claim multiple (two or even more than three) beliefs believers account for about 70% population. By using latent class analysis, this article explores pattern inter-belief mixing identifies four typical classes believers: “non-believers single-belief believers”, “believers geomancy”, diffused Buddhism Daoism”, embracing all beliefs”. Finally, find degree commitment varies across these classes. Believers are be less committed Western institutional religions, but Eastern religions.
